Approaches to Business Architecture

n this presentation Michael Payne debates the merits of placing Business Architecture within an organisation’s Business, IT or Enterprise Architecture departments. He examines some of the options available to organisations starting out with Business Architecture, and touches on Business Architecture engagement models.

Michael Payne

Michael Payne is an IT professional who writes, speaks, lectures and consults on various IT-related topics. He started his career as an accountant, but subsequently moved into the IT world. His accounting background and diverse job roles (from Auditor to Factory Manager to IT GRC Manager) have given him a broad perspective and practical experience in the design, implementation, use and management of IT in support of business activities and objectives.

Michael’s creation and delivery of the content of an IT Graduate Development Scheme for a large mining company brought to the fore an interest in training course development and presentation. He has subsequently developed and presented a number of IT-related courses on a range of topics such as IT Leadership, IT Strategy and Architecture.

Currently, Michael works for Real IRM as a trainer and senior consultant. He presents various courses including TOGAF® 9 Level 1 & 2 training, Introduction to Business Architecture, Business Architecture in Practice and the EA Bootcamp.

Michael has a solid academic background that includes TOGAF® 9 and ArchiMate certifications, TOGAF Business Architecture Level 1 Credential, diplomas in Computer Programming, Business Management and Project Management, and an honours-level IT management qualification from the University of Pretoria. In addition, he holds Bachelor of Commerce and Master of Commerce (Information Systems) degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand. His dissertation, for which he received a distinction, was on the use of information to support the management of empowered employees.
